"In His hands are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is His, for He made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed." (Psalm 95:4-5)
The purpose of the Green Chalice Program is to encourage and assist local congregations who wish to live out their faith, in part, by caring for creation. This program is designed to recognize congregations for being good stewards of God’s creation. It also aims to empower congregations with ideas and resources to enable them to walk gently on the earth.
At First Christian Church, the leadership for our Green Chalice Program is provided by our Creation Care team.

Pollinator Garden Project
In May of 2024 work began for a pollinator garden on the church grounds. The garden contains a variety of native, perennial, and annual plantings chosen to provide an extended season of pollinator habitat. Located prominently next to the sidewalk on Normal Avenue, the garden will be a stopping place for pollinators and an educational installation for pedestrians.
As the garden develops, future landscaping pieces are planned, including steppingstone paths and a water puddle feature.

Cave Run Lake Trail Project
Caring for Creation begins in our own backyard, tending to the world just outside our doors. In 2022 the Creation Care team undertook the project of restoring and maintaining a small trail at nearby Cave Run Lake. The Wildlife Habitat Trail #1215 starts at the parking lot for the Boat Gunnel Group campsite off of Highway 801. It's a family-friendly trail, currently under .4 miles in length (1 way) with views of the lake, several creek crossings, and interpretive trail signs.
The project would require 3-5 workdays annually, and volunteers participate on one or more of those workdays.
Watch the video below for an introduction to the trail. For more information contact us.
